We wholeheartedly believe we have the best volunteers at Milford Food Bank, so each month we feature one of our loyal volunteer staff members to share about. Today, we are featuring our volunteer, Mary Duncan, who is from Milford, Indiana.
How long have you been a volunteer with Milford Food Bank?
I started volunteering at MFB sometime during the summer of 2024.
How did you begin volunteering here?
My friend and fellow classmate, Bill Troup, who began this endeavor years ago, tried hard to get me to volunteer from the very beginning, but I felt I had too many other things demanding my time. Since retirement, some things have changed, and I watched what was going on at MFB and saw what a good thing it was. So, I decided to "join up!"
What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned while volunteering here?
I was surprised to learn how much food is available out there. One of the big issues, though, is organizing it and getting it out to those who need it most. That's where I come in as a volunteer. I've learned many different tasks, and what I like best is the variety of things to do. There doesn't seem to be a dull moment ever, but if there is one, somebody always jumps in to liven things up! I work one day a week, and I feel tired when my shift ends. But I leave with a feeling of satisfaction and gratitude.
What’s your favorite task to take on?
What I enjoy the most is the people I work with. We have a great deal of camaraderie, and we do a lot of laughing!
Thank you, Mary, for your commitment to Milford Food Bank and for giving back to our community.
