We wholeheartedly believe we have the best volunteers at Milford Food Bank, so each month we feature one of our loyal volunteer staff members to share about. Today, we are featuring our volunteer coordinator, Carol Haab, who is from Milford, Indiana.
How long have you been a volunteer with Milford Food Bank?
I’ve been volunteering at the food bank for approximately 12 years. We packed small boxes of food at that time. My husband and I are friends with the couple that started the food bank, and we admired the vision God gave them and wanted to help.
Why do you volunteer your time? After retirement, it was an opportunity to help others and work with people from our community.
What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned while volunteering here?
The most surprising thing I’ve learned is how much food is wasted in our society. There are still some companies that choose to throw away food instead of donating their product to help others. Our Operations Manager, Bill Doege, does a tremendous job of procuring food from many different sources. It’s amazing to see the variety and amount of food that he brings into the food bank.
What’s your favorite thing to do here?
My favorite part of working here is the people. The partners that come in on distribution days come from many different areas and have a lot of inspiring stories to share about the numerous people they serve. I also enjoy working with all the regular volunteers and the different groups that volunteer.
What’s a small moment that made a big impact on you?
Not sure that I’ve had just one small moment that has inspired me. There are two things that stand out - how many people experience food insecurity in our communities and the wonderful generosity of our donors, both corporate and individual.
What motivates you to keep coming back?
The main reason I continue to volunteer is that I feel God has placed me here for a reason. He has told us there will always be those who need help, so I’m thankful He has directed me here so I can do a small part in helping others.
Thank you, Carol, for your commitment to Milford Food Bank and to serving the Lord and giving back to our community.
